The Importance and Process of Key Duplication

You could be struggling with problem of juggling your key or adjusting it in a position to get the lock open. Having a duplicate key is always a smart decision. Keys are mostly built of brass or a mixture of nickel-brass and the pins that are present in a lock are also built of brass. After years of usage, as most things become, pins and keys wear down too. So you should do the right thing by having a duplicate key made and hand it over to a trusted neighbor, a friend, or a family member. This helps you in situations such as when you’re locked out or if a friend or family member needs to enter your house.

 Process of Key Duplication

A machine known by the name of key duplicator is employed to cut keys. The key which is going to be used for the duplication process is positioned in a vice, around the area of the machine containing the cutting tool. And the blank key is positioned in a vice, around the side of the key duplicator that contains the alignment tool, which is level with the blade and is nothing special but a piece of metal. The thing that makes sure that the keys are in proper alignment with each other is the key guide.

When the machine is switched on, both the keys, original and blank, start to move horizontally across the key duplicator. And as they are in motion, the blank key gets cut by the blade, which uses the original key as the template. Once this is achieved, lock tech will provide the duplicate with a nice finish.

Use The Right Key Blank

For working on residential keys, it is important that you choose the right key blank as there are different types of key blanks available in the marketplace. You cannot use an ordinary key blank for a master lock key as in this case, only master lock key blanks will work. There are different types of locks that offer different level of protection. And each lock and its key will require a specific key blank for cutting keys or duplication purposes.
